When is a endoscopy required?

If you are experiencing symptoms such as persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss and fatigue, blood in stool, and abdominal discomfort these may be signs of colorectal cancer. A Colonoscopy is very important (for early colon cancer detection even without symptoms). For symptoms like difficulty in swallowing, continual heartburn, indigestion and reflux a Gastroscopy of the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract may be needed. Don’t ignore the signs – your health and well-being are paramount.

Understanding Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Procedures

At ACE we specialise in two key endoscopic procedures

Colonoscopy

Colonoscope Procedure: It involves inserting the colonoscope – a flexible tube with a camera and light, through the patient’s anus to visually inspect the large intestine (colon and rectum) for abnormalities.

Conditions Detected: It can detect various conditions, including polyps, colorectal cancer, diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and other abnormalities in the colon lining.

Benefits of Colonoscopy: Early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer and also diagnose the cause of symptoms mentioned above. Additionally, polyps found during the procedure can often be removed immediately, reducing the risk of cancer.

Post Procedure: It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes after which patients may experience mild cramping or bloating. Patients are advised to rest, avoid heavy activities for the day, and typically normal diet can be resumed unless otherwise instructed by the colonoscopy doctor.

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy Procedure: It involves inserting a gastroscope—a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light—through the mouth, down the oesophagus, and into the stomach and duodenum. This allows doctors to visually examine the upper part of the digestive system for abnormalities.

Conditions Detected: Gastroscopy can detect various conditions, including gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), celiac disease, and cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, or duodenum. It is also used to investigate the above-mentioned symptoms.

Benefits of Gastroscopy: The procedure allows for early detection of serious conditions, which can lead to better outcomes. It also enables the doctor to take biopsies for further analysis and to perform treatments like removing polyps, treating bleeding lesions, or dilating narrowed areas of the oesophagus.

Post Procedure: It usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Thereafter, patients might experience a mild sore throat or bloating. Rest is recommended for the remainder of the day, and patients can usually resume normal activities and diet shortly after, unless otherwise advised by their doctor.
